Javier Cuebas joins VAMOS4PR and VAMOS4PR Action as Executive Director

New York -- VAMOS4PR and VAMOS4PR Action, a network of stateside labor, community, cultural, and human rights groups committed to fighting for a better future for Puerto Rico and empowering the Puerto Rican diaspora, announced today that Javier Cuebas will join the group as its new Executive Director.

“At a historic moment that has great potential for empowering Puerto Ricans and giving them a stronger voice in their island’s future, we are thrilled to welcome Javier to lead the work of VAMOS4PR, connecting the diaspora and allies to opportunities to support their brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico and recent arrivals to the states,” said Shirley Aldebol, Vice President of 32BJ SEIU and VAMOS4PR steering committee member. “Javier brings extensive advocacy experience, long-time relationships with Puerto Rican organizations, legislators, and other stakeholders, and skills that will help us advance our work in the streets and in the halls of Congress.”

In his role as Executive Director of VAMOS4PR and VAMOS4PR Action, Javier will work with the network’s leadership to develop and implement programs and campaigns that advance its goals, including in the areas of debt policy, economic development, and civic engagement. He will also oversee strategic planning and development, and broaden and deepen VAMOS4PR’s partnerships at this crucial time for the island.

A native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Javier has two decades of experience advising labor unions, trade associations, advocacy groups, law firms, and political candidates. Before coming to VAMOS4PR, he was Director for Advocacy for the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS) in Washington, DC.

He also brings to the role experience in advocacy strategies, crisis communications, congressional and community outreach, high-stakes litigation and strategic philanthropy.

“It is an honor and a privilege to join VAMOS4PR at this historic moment. The summer of 2019 and the 12 days when Puerto Ricans spoke with one voice against nepotism and corruption have inspired movements worldwide, which now see a small island in the Caribbean as a beacon of hope,” said Javier Cuebas. “But we are not done yet. I am committed to working with stakeholders on and off the island to tackle issues related to the public debt and other critical matters for the island and its people. The time for action is now.”

Since 2016, VAMOS4PR has worked in four areas: winning a comprehensive and fair restructure of Puerto Rico’s public debt; educating and mobilizing the Puerto Rican diaspora and its allies to once again make the island and its people a matter of concern to all concerned with economic and social justice; proposing an economy fair to all workers in Puerto Rico; and advancing long-term development solutions that will sustain Puerto Rico’s economy.
